It is said that in the 1960s, the Japanese Macaques began to follow the local Japanese using outdoor hot springs. Today, bathing in the hot springs has become part of their behaviour. They now return regularly, especially during Winter. Nagano's Jigokudani Hell Valley is the only place where the Japanese Macaques bathe in the Onsens.
As Japanese Macaques are matrilineal, the highest ranking female Macaques get priority for food, space, and the best spots in the hot spring.
